Christopher Burrell

Chris Burrell was looking for a website that could act as a showcase for his editorial illustrations, radio work and writings. He wanted a simple site, clean and clear, that would not distract from his illustrative works. The result was a site with muted colors, keeping the focus on the art and an animated slideshow to display his works. Visit Christopher Burrell.

CSS Zen Garden

CSS Zen Garden Submission

In 2006, I thought it would be interesting to create a skin for the ever present CSS Zen Garden.  The Zen Garden is a “demonstration of what can be accomplished visually through CSS-based design.” (More information can be found on that site.)

The result was a design which contained a relatively muted color palate dominated by a sandy brown with hints of orange, a few key image elements, and overall, a cohesive but simplistic design which I believe to be my best work to date. The process of designing within such rigid guidelines forced me to create a design which turned into a pedagogical exercise in imposing restraints in my creative process forcing new-found consideration in each step of the process.  The site that resulted contained fewer graphics, simpler coding, and cleaner lines.
